Von Buhl Pfalz Riesling 2017 - Pfalz, Germany

Von Buhl Pfalz Riesling 2017 - Pfalz, Germany

The Story

Since its founding in 1849, Reichsrat von Buhl has stood for some of the noblest Riesling from the best vineyards of Mittelhaardt.  At it’s peak von Buhl wines commanded higher prices than top Bordeaux or Burgundy! Yet, as with the vast majority of German wine producers, this Estate slumped in the 70s and 80s, underperforming despite having some of the best vineyard sites in the region. Over the last fifteen years, Von Buhl has managed to return its wine quality to the highest levels, thanks primarily to significant investment in both vineyard and winery.

M+Q Notes

Von Buhl' dry Riesling is drawn, in the main, from the estate's sandstone-rich vineyards around the villages of Deidesheim, Forst and Ruppertsberg. There's also some fruit from two small parcels that lie to the immediate east, Niederkirchen and Friedelsheim. All the estate vineyards are farmed organically (certified) and the wine is naturally fermented in stainless steel, with some parcels fermented in Von Buhl's oval dopplestück casks. The 2017 captures the estate's mineral and racy style to a tee, with citrus and floral notes and a dry, tangy personality. It’s an absolute bargain.
