Gentle Folk Ashton Chardonnay 2018 - Adelaide Hills, SA

The Story

Gareth Belton was in a PhD program to be a seaweed specialist when he decided to change his path to become a winemaker. It all started in 2012 when he helped his friend and well-respected winemaker, James Erskine, during vintage in Adelaide Hill’s Basket Range region. James suggested to Gareth that he should make a barrel of his own wine and the rest went from there. Gareth trained with several of the other natural winemakers in the Basket Range and then started his own project called Gentle Folk with his wife Rainbo. They began by sourcing grapes from various places in the region but now make wine primarily from their three vineyards that Gareth farms organically. All of their wines are made with lots of love and attention without any chemicals or additions except sometimes a small amount of SO2. His wines keep getting better with each vintage and 2018 was no exception.

M+Q Notes

Notes from Gareth the winemaker -

Organically farmed Chardonnay from 24 year old dry grown vines, planted in quartz rubble over deep clay sandstone.

A new site for us in 2018. In the heart of the dress circle of the Adelaide Hills is this beautiful north facing Chardonnay block coming into its own at 24 years of age. Dry grown, low yielding producing super concentrated chardonnay. Grapes were picked by hand and hand sorted on the 10th March. Slow gentle pressing, cooling and settling overnight before being racked into four 225L French barriques (25% new) for primary and malolactic fermentation (full).

A textural Chardonnay with soft green fruits, stone fruit and a warm toasty spice, with plenty of tension thanks to a mineral core that runs through it all.
