About M+Q Wines

Virginia Selleck is a country girl at heart. She grew up on a sheep station in the Southern Riverina area of New South Wales and despite coming to Melbourne as a boarding school student, Virginia has never lost her love of the country. She travelled extensively throughout Europe in her 20’s but was later based in London where she worked at The Ritz Hotel and began to develop an intense interest in wine. Since then she had been the sommelier at various Melbourne’s best restaurants, including Rockpool Bar & Grill, Cumulus Inc., The Stokehouse in St Kilda,  Bellota and The Prince Wine Store. Truly inquisitive about others, Virginia takes the time to listen, engage and advise, the essential requirements for selecting wines. Virginia will be combining both her love of wine and travel in bringing some of her greatest finds to M + Q.

Kirsten Dickie only wanted to do one thing when she finished high school - pack her bag for a ski season in Colorado. On her return she started working at one of Melbourne’s first real coffee institutions, Mario’s in Fitzroy. But, not being satisfied with working for others, Kirsten decided to open her own restaurant. It was a huge undertaking for a twenty-one year old but it proved to be a success. After 10 years, however, it was time to move on and do the type of things that most people want to do in their twenties. Two of these were to  travel and complete her Bachelor of Photography whilst remaining in the hospitality industry. Kirsten will bring her love of travel, hospitality, design and photography to M +Q to make it not only a wine store but an all encompassing food, wine and travel experience.

With over 40 years experience between them and a wealth of food and wine knowledge ‘The Girls’, as they’re affectionately named by their friends, came up with idea for a boutique online wine store during a recent trip to New York. While sitting in one of their favourite wine bars in Greenwich Village they simultaneously conceived of both the concept and name: Magnum + Queens. They knew that they would be able to supply quality wine from small producers direct to wine loving patrons at super competitive prices, and provide them with the opportunity to drink as well as they do. This was not only an opportunity to sell wine but also a platform to combine their travel and hospitality experiences and pass on their extensive and  combined knowledge of wine, food and travel.

We, 'The Girls', source M+Q wine from literally all over the globe - from small, family-run wineries and young entrepreneurial producers of quirky and natural wine types, and let some of the benchmark producers 'strut their stuff' for us. There will be, for example, sherry, sake, single vineyard Champagne, Sancerre, Semillon from the Hunter Valley, Spatburgunder from Germany, Sandrone Barolo, Syrah from New Zealand and sweet Sercial from Madiera. Sounds exhausting—don' t fade yet. We are buying very widely so you can drink very widely and well. And if it's not listed on our site, please tell us and we will find it for you, even if it means going to the vineyard ourselves. We will use any excuse for doing that... xx
