THE WINE'S STORY

The Yarra Valley has some spectacular vineyards and Zonzo Estate is one extremely impressive set up. Owned by Rod Micallef, the development of Zonzo Estate wine label has been a labour of love. To see this dream come to fruition, Rod enlisted the extremely talented winemakers Kate Goodman and Caroline Mooney.

Zonzo Estate acquired the surrounding estate vineyard in early 2015 which was initially established by Train Trak wines. In May 2016, Zonzo Estate released its premier wine range known as the Reserve range, the debut collection includes Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz.

Wine maker Caroline Mooney’s wine career officially began in 1995 working in cellar door sales at Yarra Ridge. Following her passion for wine making, she moved to noted wine region McLaren Vale, South Australia to complete her first vintage at Hardy’s Tintara before returning home to hone her skills at Yering Station. Mooney completed her Wine Science degree in 2006 and travelled France’s Rhône Valley, working at one of the most highly regarded and respected producers, J.L. Chave, where she learnt about and developed further respect for terroir driven produce. In 2008 she released her first solo wine making project, labelled under 'Bird on a Wire' wines, which has since become a local and international success. 

Wine maker Kate Goodman’s wine career also began in McLaren Vale. After deciding that a career in Biomedical Science didn’t offer enough of the creativity she craved, Goodman returned to her wine making interests working in South Australia and the Clare Valley before spending seven years at Seppelts winery in the Grampians, Victoria. In 2000 she took a job as chief wine maker at Punt Road Wines in the Yarra Valley. She spent fourteen years in the position before starting her own label, Goodman Wines and co-leasing a winery with Caroline Mooney, the pair have developed multiple wine vintages together. 

Their combined efforts, creativity and passion for quality winemaking has helped Zonzo Estate develop as a leading wine producer in the Yarra Valley, and our recent visit and tasting of their range has impressed us enormously.

SOMMELIER NOTES

A wine of broody depth, intensity and detail. Pretty aromas of rose petal, spicy cedar and red cherries, lead to soft silky light weight tannins. Abundant raspberries, cherries and beautifully balanced oak. We were so impressed with this Pinot Noir that we had to have it on the M+Q site as well as a few dozen for our personal cellar.
