Athletes of Wine ‘Alto Alto’ NV - Macedon Ranges, Victoria

THIS WINE’S STORY

Think two Melbourne Sommeliers mates with awesomely talented palates, winners of Len Evans Tutorials and buckets of passion about wine, this is Liam O’Brien and Matt Brooke of Athletes of Wine. In 2007 they had the opportunity to tend and nurture a plot of vines in the Macedon Ranges. With no real game plan what has emerged is high quality small selection wines that show real representation of their terroir. We are thrilled to be able to feature their 'Alto Alto' as it represents a fantastic expression of their philosophy of low intervention and instinct driven viticulture.

SOMMELIER NOTES

Alto blends 58% Chardonnay, 29.5% Riesling and 12.5% Sauvignon Blanc. It is mostly dry but not bone dry, lemon, straw and an all rounded finish.

FOOD PAIRING

Vitello Tonnato beside the Alto! Bravo!

Stift Goettweig Gruner Veltliner Messwein 2015 - Kremstal, Austria

THE WINE'S STORY

The Austrian wine growing region of Kremstal is along side the Wachau, which is a UNESCO world heritage site. It is home to 1,400 hectares of vineyards, many of them on steep terraces growing Gruner Veltliner and Riesling. There are two different mesoclimates at work here. Summers are dry and winters are very cold and they are moderated by the Danube river. Cold down the slope winds originate and case big swings between day and night time temperatures, especially in the months prior to harvest. This interaction of weather helps build complex aromas in the grapes.

SOMMELIER NOTES

Messwein is the lightest wine in this producers range, it is subtle and light with classic Veltliner spice, red apple, citrus and rosewood, very multi-layered and expressive.

FOOD PAIRING

Prawn, pea and saffron risotto

Vinteloper Pinot Gris 2016 - Adelaide Hills, South Australia

THIS WINE’S STORY

Vinteloper is a fiercely independent winery owned and operated by David Bowley.

He is unapologetically producing small batch artisan varietal wines that have been specifically matched with the South Australian regions in which David believes they are grown best, the wines express individual vineyard site and winemaker personality. These are hand crafted and spirited wines!

The home vineyard is at Norton Summit in the Adelaide Hills, it is a region brimming with creative energy and is growing great produce.

SOMMELIER NOTES

The Pinot Gris is so far the most popular in the full Vinteloper range of wines. Fresh aromatics, all hand harvested, wild yeast addition to give it a funky, natural edge with extended lees contact for creaminess and texture. Flinty mineral driven acidity throughout with citrus nutty undertones.

FOOD PAIRING

Crisp pork belly with fennel and white anchovy salad

Glaetzer ‘Nouveau’ Pinot Noir 2016 - Tamar & Derwent Valleys, Tasmania

THIS WINE’S STORY

Winemaker Nick Glaetzer was the 2011 Gourmet Traveller Young winemaker of the year. He has since continued producing exceptional quality wines over the last six years. A man who doesn't do anything by halves, he is committed to making three distinctly different styles of Pinot, the light weight Nouveau, mid range Avance and the seriously structured Reveur. All wines are from single vineyards in Tasmania, which are consistently producing incredible cool climate wines.

M+Q NOTES

Glaetzer’s Nouveau Pinot is made the style of the original Beaujolais Nouveau-fresh, luscious and ideally suited to drinking now. Lifted sweet and sour red fruit, hints of dried spices and clove, plus a hint of orange rind. It's time to drink this wine now!

FOOD PAIRING

Roast Duck with ginger and shitake rice

Luciano Sandrone Dolcetto d’Alba 2015 - Piedmont, Italy

THIS WINE’S STORY

One of the stand out producers of Piedmont who brilliantly combines the old and new worlds of wine. Since he was a teen, Luciano Sandrone wanted to be a winemaker. He began his career as a cellar-man working in the historic Marchesi di Barolo estate, saving his money until he could afford to buy his first parcel of land in Cannubi Boschis in 1977. Cleaning out his savings to buy this land, Sandrone made his wines at home in his parents' garage, quietly working and revising his techniques until he caught the wine world's attention in 1989 and 1990 with great critical attention. Since then, nothing has slowed down for Sandrone, and it would seem that neither he nor his fans would want it to.

M+Q Notes

Often referred to, as fruit with guts the 15 Dolcetto is subtle with cherry, blue plum and anise. Medium bodied with complex hints of earth and minerals.

Food Pairing

Home made pappardelle with rabbit ragu

Athletes of Wine ‘Vinero’ Pinot Noir 2014 - Macedon Ranges, Victoria

M+Q Notes

The 'Vinero' label is reserved for wines which have timeless structure and layers; those that are made in the vineyard – an expression of a carefully chosen site and quality viticulture.

Cherry fruit, medium weight framed by elegant oak, with intense spice and perfume from whole bunch winemaking.

Chicken liver pate
