Wine Notes

Villa Locatelli Friulano 2016 - Friuli-Venezia Giulia, Italy

THE WINE'S STORY

Angoris villa locatelli is steeped in history. In order to thank him for his service in the 30 Years War, Locatelli Locatelli was given 300 fields in an area of Cormòns known as “Langoris” by then Emperor Ferdinand III in 1648. At the time this area of Friuli was part of the Hapsburg Empire. From this time on Tenuta di Angoris became a retreat for the royalty and èlite from throughout the Hapsburg Empire. Villa Locatelli, which still dominates the estate, became a symbol of quality and hospitality and the wines that came from the estate made their way across the royal courts of Europe. Over three centuries later it is still regarded as one of the most prestigious wineries in Friuli.

M+Q NOTES

This medium bodied wine is classic Fruilano.Medium bodied with fragrant wildflowers, honeysuckle, nectarine and fennel are drawn across the waxy palate. Wildflowers dominate the nose with some richness of almond and honeysuckle combine with some vegetal geranium leaf and hay aromas. A very well balanced wine with a bitter almond finish.

Billy Button Malvasia 2015 - Alpine Valleys, Victoria

THE WINE'S STORY

Billy Button Wines began its life in 2014 and is the wine brand of super talented wine maker Jo Marsh. The botanists among us will know that this name belongs to the bouncy yellow balls of goodness that colour the mountain tops of the Alpine Valleys. The wines in the Billy Button range are the culmination of three factors: emerging region, varietal diversity and an inspired winemaking vision. If you happen to be in Bright, Victoria there is a great cellar door wine store that is worth a visit.

M+Q NOTES

Malvasia (Istriana) is widely planted on the Istrian peninsular of Croatia, Slovenia and Friuli region of North East Italy. It is is believed to have originated in Greece Jo managed to source Malvasia for the first time in 2015 and at the time knew very little about the variety so used a 'hands off' approach to her winemaking and let the variety show itself. It has produced a wine that is fruit driven, yet with complex savoury notes, quite light on the palate but round and textural at the same time. Sourced from the Mulcahy Vineyard at Porepunkah.

Mud Crab with a touch of chilli

Chateau De Roquefort VDP Petit Salle Blanc Clairette 2010 - Provence, France

THE WINE'S STORY

Raimond de Villeneuve's impressively beautiful, biodynamic vineyard is situated in an amphitheater, thus having a very special microclimate. Château de Roquefort is at an altitude of 1000 feet, allowing later harvesting, which results in more freshness and greater phenolic maturity, and therefore more complexity than is usual in Provençal wines.

M+Q NOTES

Pale color, fine bouquet with a floral and mineral character and notes of white peach and lemon. Lively on the palate, a precise wine, influenced by limestone and flint, delightfully fresh.

FOOD PAIRING

Freshly shucked oysters

Oggi Fiano/Arneis 2016 By Crittenden Estate - Mornington Peninsula, Victoria

THE WINE'S STORY

Ever keen to try new things, for Rollo Crittenden the Oggi B is his chance to play around with alternate winemaking styles. From the Italian word ‘today’, OGGI this an  opportunity to show people what The Crittenden Etstate are trialling in the winery from day to day and year to year.

Step into any winery around Australia during vintage and you can be guaranteed to find a small batch of something obscure bubbling away in the corner. Whole bunch ferments, mixed varietal ferments, hot v cold ferments, the possibilities are endless

The sad thing though is that by and large these wines rarely see the light of day. Due to limited volumes and a lack of continuity they will invariably be blended away – never available for public scrutiny or enjoyment. Things have changed now with the introduction of OGGI a way to experiment and also bring these wines to customers.

M+Q NOTES

This is a blend of Fiano and Arneis fermented on skins in an attempt from Rollo to make his own version of ‘amber’ wine.

It’s not the full-blown orange style, more of a happy medium of varietal character and freshness but with the additional mouthfeel that is picked up from time on skins. It’s a delicious drink with a little extra interest if you want to look for it.

Fiano dominant nose of apples and pears, honeysuckle and beeswax. It’s got lovely smooth mouthfeel and plenty of fruit weight in the palate. Acidity and freshness is the key and the balance is just right.

Valdesil Montenovo Godello Blanco 2015 - Valdeorras, Spain

THE WINE'S STORY

Valdeorras is a region of Galicia in the southern part of Spain and it is Galicia’s most inland region with its elevation up to 1,000 metres. Old bush vines dominate here in the black slate hills of Valdeorras. this is seriously challenging territory to make wine, these are rugged highlands subject to hot summers and cold winters.

 M + Q note

Very impressive white that is a little Chardonnay-like with a chalky, salty mineral character, lemon pith, herbal notes and some real depth on the finish

FOOD PAIRING

Fried Almondswith paprika (Almendras Fritas)

Ziereisen Blauer Spatburgunder 2013 - Baden, Germany

THE WINE'S STORY

Hanspeter Ziereisen's Schulen vineyard is at a former bomb shelter in Baden, Germany. He is a highly unusual German winemaker farming organically and fermenting spontaneously. His Pinot Noirs are from limestone-rich soils that produce strikingly mineral-laden wines that are floral with great character and depth.

M+Q NOTES

Light to medium bodied with fine powdery tannins. A fabulous savoury wine with plenty of ripe red berry fruit and a touch of chocolate. Mineral rich without showing and obvious oak. This wine is incredibly moorish and is perfect for a Sunday Yum Cha lunch!

Vinteloper Touriga Nacional 2016 - Langhorne Creek, South Australia

THE WINE'S STORY

Vinteloper is a fiercely independent winery owned and operated by David Bowley.

He is unapologetically producing small batch artisan varietal wines that have been specifically matched with the South Australian regions in which David believes they are grown best, the wines express individual vineyard site and winemaker personality. These are hand crafted and spirited wines!

The home vineyard is at Norton Summit in the Adelaide Hills, it is a region brimming with creative energy and is growing great produce.

M+Q NOTES

Touriga Nacional is thought to have originated from the Dao region of Portugal and today is known as the preeminent variety of Portuguese red wine. A varietal that is perfectly suited to the warm climate and soil conditions of Langhorne Creek. Medium bodied and bright with classic aromatics of perfumed violet and lavender. This complex wine wine has just the right balance of mineral and spice. One of our all time favourites a M+Q.

Artigiano Primitivo 2015 - Puglia, Italy

THE WINE'S STORY

Artigiano (literally, ‘artisan’) make hand-crafted Italian wine of great value and deep character. Artigiano is an exciting brand of artisan wines, made and imported by McLaren Vale’s Aramis Vineyards. Each wine is produced in consultation with Aramis’s own winemakers, with the sole aim of capturing the essence of classic Italian wine styles, using local varietals made in the traditional styles.

M+Q NOTES

The name Primitivo stems from the Italian word ‘primo’, meaning ‘first’, as it has the tendency to ripen before all other varietals. This deightful wine hails from the sun- kissed Puglia in the heel of Southern Italy. Whitewashed dwellings nestle amongst ancient olive groves, and  bush vines dominate the clay plains, and the cooling breezes from the Adriatic Sea help protect the vineyards against the hot summer sun. Intense ruby red in colour, it is vibrant and juice on the palate with intriguing hints of baked fruits and tabacco.

Jordi Miro Garnatxa Negra / Syrah 2015 - Terra Alta, Spain

THE WINE'S STORY

Jordi Miro’s passion for wine started at an early age. As a child, he worked in his family’s vineyards alongside his father, Miguel Miro. There he learned to prune, plow, cultivate, and harvest. The family has been growing grapes in the region for generations - Jordi’s maternal grandfather had his own small winery, while his paternal grandfather, Jaume, was a renowned grafter in the region and an expert cultivator.

In 2009, Jordi began to construct his own small winery. Today, Jordi experiments to create innovative new wines and styles. Traditionally in Terra Alta, whites and reds were produced by the skin contact maceration process. Jordi's wines combine traditional methods with a modern touch. He employs spontaneous fermentation with native yeasts, and wines are very minimally fined or filtered.

M+Q NOTES

Jordi’s philosophy is to do as much as possible in the vineyard to create the wine there, and then vinify with minimal intervention. The Garnatxa Negra is a blend of 50% red Grenache, 50% Syrah  - mid weight with beautiful freshness, relativly low in tannins, blackberries, raspeberry fruit, light acidity. It is a little dusty and savoury.

This is volcanic terroir up to 800 metres high on the slopes of Mount Teide (Spain’s highest mountain) and vines have survived here on the Canary Islands for centuries. Naturally low yields, it is artisanal wine growing with low input organic viticulture, ungrafted old vines and hands off, yet precise winemaking.

M + Q note

A blend of two grape varieties Listan Negro and Tintilla ( Trousseau). A light to medium bodied red with super crunchy cherry fruit and some spicy, stoney notes from the volcanic soils, there is enormous energy and freshness to this

FOOD PAIRING

Le Casematte Nero D’Avola 2015 - Sicily, Italy

THE WINE'S STORY

Set in the northeastern corner of Sicily, near Messina, Le Cassematte focuses on a single, tiny, quality-driven appellation: Faro.Anyone who has met Gianfranco recognizes his enthusiasm and passion for fine wine and the amazing island of Sicily. Today, Gianfranco owns his own winery alongside partners Filippo Pistone and Italian soccer champion, Andrea Barzagli. Pristine and remote, these vineyards benefit from the constant sea breezes of the Messina Strait, notably the Sirocco wind during summer. Large temperature swings give the wines excellent aromatic qualities and a freshness running through the whole range.

M+Q NOTES

Intense ruby red tending towards garnet, this Nero d’Avola has a vast array of fruity aromas with notes of ripe plum, cheery fruit and a hint of liquorice and spice. This medium bodied Nero d’avila has excellent acidity and is a perfect match with almost and meats or charcuterie.
