Wine Notes

Jeanneret ‘Big Fine Girl’ Riesling 2017 - Clare Valley, SA

THE WINE'S STORY

The Jeanneret story begins with Swiss chemist Denis Jeanneret and his wife Pat, and with all the hallmarks of Swiss precision and attention to detail, they set up their property in the Skilly Hills of the Clare Valley. Their first vintage release to the Australian market was in 1992.

Son Ben is now driving things at Jeanneret, with a clear winemaking philosophy of letting nature take its course and to make ‘naturally perfect’ wines. They grow from two vineyards located in the Armagh Valley of north-western Clare, that are run with an organic philosophy, of all hand pruning and picking through to minimal handling in the winery. The results are worthy of the effort with the wines being impeccable representations of the Clare Valley.

M+Q NOTES

Pure, super fresh dry Riesling is what people love about Clare Valley Rieslings.

2016 was a perfect growing vintage in the Clare. Beautifully light and dry, aromas of white flowers and citrus, this is a very pretty wine.

FOOD PAIRING

Poached prawns with lime spiced salt

Byrne Chardonnay 2016 - Sunbury, Victori

THE WINE'S STORY

Alex Bryne grew up around Ballarat and experienced wine making life as a teenager helping his family friends at the Taltarni winery. He moved to winery work at Dominique Portet in the Yarra Valley in 2002, before completing vintages in the Northern Rhone Valley of France, Margaret River and Argentina.

His time in Burgundy in 2008, cemented his love of cool climate viticulture.

He returned to Australia to take up an assistant winemaker role at Lethbridge Estate near GeelongCurrent day Alex makes his very own impressive cool climate wines from vineyards at both Ballarat and Sunbury, this is high quality, small volume Australian winemaking, with Chardonnay and Pinot Noir the varieties that he excels with.

M+Q NOTES

Small parcels of fruit are sourced from single blocks in Sunbury at the Galli Estate vineyard, to produce this elegant, medium bodied Chardonnay. White peach aromas with citrus and just a hint of oak.

FOOD PAIRING

Salt baked whole fish

Airlie Bank Cabernet Franc 2017 - Yarra Valley, Victoria

THE WINE'S STORY

Airlie bank is a second label at the Punt Road winery in the Yarra Valley. Winemaker Tim Shand and the team enjoy freedom to push boundaries in their winemaking. Their small-batch ethos has led to a great deal of creativity in their production and ever-decreasing doses of sulphur. Nothing is out of limits here if an opportunity appears, as demonstrated by this 100% whole bunch Cabernet Franc

M+Q NOTES

A rustic mid-weight wine made in large oak barrels with no fining or filtering. Resulting in lush tannins with a core of ripe and juicy fruit with notes of earth and bramble fruits, red licorice and clove.

Delinquente ‘The Bullet Dodger’ Montepulciano 2017 - Riverland, S

THE WINE'S STORY

This is wild child packaging but don’t be afraid, nothing to worry about, the brand was designed by a guy called Ankles

This is from the Riverland in South Australia, not too fashionable but it is a hot dry climate and is a home to growing many Italian varietals. Small batch, honest, unpretentious wines made with flair, similar to the packaging!

M+Q NOTES

Loads of forward fruit, crushed blackberries, plums, mulberry and licorice, loads of earth and spice and a dry inky finish that is medium bodied and completely ‘slurp-able’!

FOOD PAIRING

Grandma's sausage rolls

Lana by Pizzini Barbera Nebbiolo 2015 - King Valley, Victoria

THE WINE'S STORY

Lana is a new label from the Pizzini winery in the King Valley of North Eastern Victoria made by Joel Pizzini.

The Pizzini’s Italian heritage has inspired this Piedmont style red blend of Nebbiolo and Barbera and we think they have cleverly replicated the tannins that you would expect to find in the red wines in Northern Italy. Lana is actually named after the familys’ home town the

M+Q NOTES

This wine highlights the best of the two varieties. Nebbiolo offers structure, tannin and savoury characters while the Barbera brings raspberry red fruits and lively acidity.

FOOD PAIRING

Fennel salami and olives

Frederick Stevenson Pignata Dry Red 2017- Barossa Valley, SA Cinsault, Shiraz, Mouvedre, Grenache blend

THE WINE'S STORY

Frederick Stevenson’s winemaking is self-described as ‘Debaucherous acitivities with grapes’ according to winemaker Steve Crawford. Not at all your typical blended red wine from the Barossa Valley, 40% Cinsault29% Shiraz, 23% Grenache and 8% Mourvedre, this is super light-weight but holds a warm core of crunchy ripe fruit, it is the polar opposite of big Barossa whopper wines.

Only 5,000 bottles are produced from each vintage, with labels proudly sporting the works of young, emerging artists from Adelaide and change every vintage.

M+Q NOTES

Lip-smacking crunchy sour cherry and rhubarb nearly ripe strawberry. Soft garden herbs and baking spices, mineral laced tannins to close. Chewy and charismatic.

FOOD PAIRING

Beef brisket with Brussels sprout slaw
