Brash Higgins 'CHN' Chenin Blanc 2016 - McLaren Vale, South Australia

THE WINE'S STORY

Brash Higgins is the label of winemaker Brad Hickey. With a background as one of America’s top sommeliers, Hickey came to Australia and fell in love with McLaren Vale and local vigneron Nicole Thorpe, with whom he now produces highly characterful, minimalist wines from their much-loved Omensetter vineyard.

M+Q NOTES

Only 105 cases of the dry style 'CHN' were produced from the white beach sands of Blewitt Springs subregion of McLaren Vale. Great natural acidity, and medium palate weight with honey, apples and straw.

Dagger Pinot Grigio 2016 - King Valley, Victoria

THIS WINE'S STORY

Originating form Italy's northeast,Pinot Grigio is an Italian staple. Like a dagger, this Pinot Grigio from the King and Alpine Valleys is sharp, fine and tight."The wine label Cloak and Dagger evolved during the 2016 vintage when two unexpected parcels of wine popped intriguingly out from amongst the chaos, to reveal 2 interesting and delicious expressions of Sangiovese and Pinot Grigio. We stumbled and fell even deeper in love with the delicate and bewitching aromatics of cool climate Pinot Grigio. We have created this blend focusing on highlighting the alpine herbal elements of this variety balanced by the freshness of Nashi pears and the steely acidity synonymous with Pinot Grigio. Cloak and Dagger is an expression that conjures up mystery and intrigue, we hope these wines stimulate your curiosity and enchant you in much the same way!" Nina and Callie (winemakers)

M+Q NOTES

Nashi pears, stone fruit and lemon verbena with a tight acidic backbone and beautiful length.

FOOD PAIRING

Spaghettini vongole with bottarga

Medhurst Estate Vineyard Rosé 2017 - Yarra Valley, VIC

THE WINE'S STORY

Medhurst Wines is the realisation of the long held and shared vision of Ross and Robyn Wilson to own a property in the Yarra Valley and produce high quality wines. Ross was CEO of Southcorp and drove the company’s acquisition of Penfolds, Lindemans and Wynns in 1990. He has remained passionate about wine ever since.

Ross and Robyn Wilson spent years looking for the perfect site and for many reasons they jointly decided on the Yarra Valley. Robyn Wilson spent her childhood here, and the Australian and international status of this excellent cool climate wine region and its incredible beauty, helped make their decision.

The Medhurst Vineyard was also particularly chosen for its favourable microclimate, north facing slopes, good drainage and magnificent aspect. It was planted in 2000 with chardonnay, pinot noir, cabernet sauvignon and shiraz.

M+Q NOTES

The 2017 growing season was cool and mild, producing wines with wonderful acidity, flavours and fine boned slinky tannins. Very pale copper with bright salmon hue. Deliciously elusive fresh fruits including strawberry and raspberry are supported by hints of fennel and white blossom of jasmine. The palate is savoury and refined with a supple creamy texture. This really is an exceptional rosé that ticks all the boxes for us: perfect warm weather drop the hard part will be stopping at a few glasses

Chiara Boschis E Pira Dolcetto d'Alba DOC 2015 - Piedmont, Italy

THE WINE'S STORY

We have been in love with wine maker Chiara Boschis wines for some time now. Her wine making produces exceptional quality wines and she cites terroir as one of their most important expression to show the diversity of their wines. The Boschis family purchased E. Pira & Figli in 1981, propelling the young Chiara into a role significantly different to that intended by her economics degree. The family was, until recently, proprietors of Barolo’s historic Giacomo Borgogno estate (Chiara originally learnt her wine-making skills from her brothers) but she brought her considerable determination, charm, patience and confidence to bear on raising the quality and image of Pira to that which it enjoys today. Her philosophy is to craft wines that marry the extraordinary power of Barolo with approachability, promoting great aromatics, lush textures and elegance. This has been achieved through strict vineyard management, careful selection and impeccable vinification techniques. Beginning as one of only two female oenologists working in Barolo, Chiara is nowadays regarded as every bit the equal of her peers.

Chiara has recently been joined by her brother Giorgio, and the two have expanded their Barolo vineyards to now include Mosconi and Ravera in Monforte and Gabutti in Serralunga.

M+Q NOTES

From Monforte (Ravera and Le Coste), this is fermented and aged in stainless steel to produce a racy wine with bright berry fruit, spice and floral notes, the tannins ripe and round. It's a more full style than some Dolcetto but there is a reason we love Chiara's wines and it's pretty simple - they always deliver exceptional quality and this Dolcetto is now a firm M+Q favourite.

Goodman Nikkal Pinot Noir 2016 - Yarra Valley, Victoria

THE WINE'S STORY

Wine maker Kate Goodman’s wine career also began in McLaren Vale. After deciding that a career in Biomedical Science didn’t offer enough of the creativity she craved, Goodman returned to her wine making interests working in South Australia and the Clare Valley before spending seven years at Seppelts winery in the Grampians, Victoria. In 2000 she took a job as chief wine maker at Punt Road Wines in the Yarra Valley. She spent fourteen years in the position before starting her own label, Goodman Wines and is producing outstanding wines of exceptional quality.

M+Q NOTES

The Pinot Noir is a blend of two vineyards, one in the Christmas Hills is a cooler site and one in the heart of the Yarra Valley at Coldstream. Fragrant aromas of lifted cherry spice, anise with savoury, earthy undertones. Subtle and savoury with a mid weight palate; think earth, cedar and dark cherries with a bright finish and velvety tannins. Perfect with food or on it's own.

Lucien Muzard & Fils Bourgogne Rouge Pinot Noir 2014 - Burgundy, France

THE WINE'S STORY

Domaine Lucien Muzard & Fils is run by brothers Claude and Hervé Muzard. The estate was established in 1645, which makes the brothers the ninth generation of winemakers to manage the domaine. Claude and Hervé share the responsibility of tending to the vineyards and running the winery. The brothers are devout in their commitment to working naturally with respect to the land. They incorporate both organic and biodynamic practices into their farming methods, aiming to be as delicate as possible in their handling of the grapes. The Muzard brothers conduct harvest and sorting manually, which plays a role in helping them craft elegant Pinot Noir with depth and complexity.

M+Q NOTES

Lavender, violets, blue berries and red cherries. This wine is  bright, vibrant with wonderful aromatics of cedar and subtle infusion of fresh herbs. Elegant comes to mind as the perfect description for this wine as it's incredibly well balanced with fine silky tannins: This wine is really delivering for the price and is great to drink now or to cellar for up to 5 years.
