Benjamin Leroux Volnay 2016 - Volnay, Côte-d'Or, Burgundy, France

The Story

Benjamin Leroux, the gifted manager/winemaker of Domaine Comte Armand launched his own label with the 2007 vintage. Leroux works with vineyards he manages, vineyards he owns and also buys fruit (never juice or wine) from growers with who he can work closely; growers that produce the quality of fruit to match Leroux’s exacting standards. Half of the vineyards that Leroux works with are currently organic or biodynamic (this percentage is growing) and 100% of the sites are ploughed with no herbicides or pesticides used at all in any of the sites. 2015 was a disappointment in crop yields for Leroux's Volnay villages-just five barrels were made in.The quality of what was produced was exceptional with around 50% of the wine declassified 1er Cru. This year the 1er cru sites: La Gigotte, Les Mitans and Les Santenots, provide the heavyweight material, with the balance coming from the villages Les Famines and La Gigotte.

M+Q Notes

With the use of no new oak and from destemmed fruit, the '15 is a super pure, highly perfumed Volnay that tastes every bit the 1er cru. An elegant nose of earthy aromas of red pinot fruit, violet and game. Fine-grained tannins dusty and well-balanced finale, satin textured with dark cherry fruit. The addition of the 1er site is evident and this is an exceptional good Volnay villages.

Food Suggestion
