Hughes & Hughes Pinot Noir 2017 - Derwent Valley, Tasmania

The Story

After taking home the "Best New Act" at the 2018 Young Gun of Wine awards, and this week being named James Halliday's Best New Winery for 2019, this brotherly duo is one to watch.  In the tiny village of Flowerpot in southern Tasmania, brothers Matthew and Jonathan Hughes with their wives Margie and Cathie created Mewstone Wines. Jonathan (Jonny) studied Economics at University but after finishing his degree he decided to pursue winemaking. He spent several years working vintages in various regions around the world including Central Otago in New Zealand, Barolo in Italy, Okanagan Valley in Canada and Hunter Valley in New South Wales before returning home to Tasmania.

M+Q Notes

This wine is a blend of Pinot Noir grapes from Huon Valley, D’Entrecasteaux Channel, Coal River Valley and Derwent Valley all fermented separately. Flavours of bright cherry fruit with smoky earthy notes dominate with an herbal undertone with strong natural acidity. There’s a hint of well-integrated oak and a spiciness that balances well with the dark berry fruit character.
