Veronica Ortega Quite Mencía 2016 - Bierzo, Spain

The Story

Before starting her own wine label, Veronica has had experience all over the world, Burnt Cottage NZ, Niepoort Portugal and one of the worlds best producers Domain Romanee Conti France. When she returned to Spain she worked for Raul Perez in Bierzo in which Raul made an impression on her as to Bierzo was the region she needed to stay and set up camp. In Bierzo she found the variety, Mencia that bears many similarities to both Pinot and Syrah, refreshing acidity, bright fruit and an affinity for expressing terrior. In 2010 Veronica launched her own project and in 2014 she moved in to her own cellar. Veronica biodynamically farms several small plots of land totalling five hectares.

M+Q Notes

This Mencía comes from vines that are over 80 years old. A portion of the wine is aged in clay amphorae. The wine expresses a floral delicate side of Mencía, it shows aromas of blackberries, violet and cherry cola. On the palate there’s juicy dark fruits of dark plum, black raspberry and cassis. Vibrant acidity, finely woven tannins and an elegant structure.
