Vale da Capucha ‘Fossil’ Tinto 2016 - Lisboa, Portugal

The Story

Vale da Capucha is a winery located off the Atlantic ocean coast in Lisbon. Pedro Marques is the winemaker who produces wines from his families organic vineyards on 400 million year old Kimmeridgian limestone. The family started off growing grapes for bulk production but decided 10 years ago to make their own wine led by Pedro. They practise hands-off wine winemaking that includes wild yeasts, no filtering or fining and only small amount of sulphites. Their wines have a strong influence from the nearby ocean that help to create briny and mineral wines.

M+Q Notes

Mostly made from organic Touriga National grapes with the remaining a combination of Tinta Roriz and Syrah. This wine is made in an elegant style with well integrated fruit, tannins and acidity. Flavours of black currant, dark plum, black pepper and mushroom. The tannins are silky and meld beautifully with the savoury spices and fresh acidity on the finish.
