The Story

Rob Burley is originally from New Zealand where he started his Viticulture and Winemaking studies in which he finished in Australia. Following finishing up his studies he gained experience by doing vintages in France, America and NZ. Rob then took up working alongside the talented Bill Downie and Patrick Sullivan in Victoria, during this time the concept for Unkel was born. Rob has been working with organic growers throughout Victoria, but primarily in Heathcote, where he is sourcing the Sangiovese and Vermentino. He is moving the operation in 2019 and will be making his wines in Nelson, New Zealand going forward.

M+Q Notes

Merlot sourced from a vineyard in Hastings in the Mornington Peninsula. Fruit was de-stemmed then had two weeks skin contact before pressing to old oak. The wine is full of dark fruits and pepper note. Capsicum jumps out in the glass that mingles with blackberries and dark plum. On the palate there’s more black pepper and savoury notes and dense black cherry. Medium bodied with fine tannins.
