San Giusto A Rentennano Chianti Classico Riserva “DOCG 'Le Baròncole' 2015 DOCG - Tuscany, Italy

The Wine's Story

One of the most respected and highly regarded estates in Tuscany is San Giusto a Rentennano. I had the privilege of being taken through the estate two years ago as a guest and was treated to some of the my favourite ranking wines of all time. Originally a monastery fortified in 1204 by the Florentines as their boundary with Siena, today uses the underground vaults built as part of the fortification as their cellars. For centuries it was owned by the Ricasoli family of neighbouring Brolio, passing to the Martini di Cigala family in 1957. This stunning 160 hectare estate, with 30 hectares of vineyards, is run by brothers and sister team of Francesco, Luca and Elisabetta. The vineyards enjoy exceptional exposure with considerable day and night temperature differences and the terrain is composed of various soils rich in minerals. Located in the warmer southern reaches of the Chianti Classico zone, known as Gaiole, the wines always showcase quintessential Sangiovese characteristics of floral, mineral and bright red cherry notes, always with healthy heaps of acidity.

M+Q Notes

The 2015 Chianti Classico Riserva Le Baroncole is made of Sangiovese 97% - Canaiolo 3%. The initial stages of its production are the same as Chianti Classico but it is aged in barriques for between 16 to 20 months, bottled unfiltered and held for a further six months prior to release. The wine remains young and fragrant on the nose and is very lively with plenty of black fruit, forest floor, charcoal and tobacco to keep things interesting. Plenty of this complexity in the new oak but with restraint allowing the fruit to shine through. The finish is expressive and unusually silky for a Chianti Classico; this wine really is a treat and almost impossible to get your hands on!
