San Giusto A Rentennano Chianti Classico 2016 DOCG - Tuscany, Italy

The Story

One of the most respected and highly regarded estates in Tuscany is San Giusto a Rentennano. I had the privilege of being taken through the estate two years ago as a guest and was treated to some of the my favourite ranking wines of all time. Originally a monastery fortified in 1204 by the Florentines as their boundary with Siena, today uses the underground vaults built as part of the fortification as their cellars. For centuries it was owned by the Ricasoli family of neighbouring Brolio, passing to the Martini di Cigala family in 1957. This stunning 160 hectare estate, with 30 hectares of vineyards, is run by brothers and sister team of Francesco, Luca and Elisabetta. The vineyards enjoy exceptional exposure with considerable day and night temperature differences and the terrain is composed of various soils rich in minerals. Located in the warmer southern reaches of the Chianti Classico zone, known as Gaiole, the wines always showcase quintessential Sangiovese characteristics of floral, mineral and bright red cherry notes, always with healthy heaps of acidity.

M+Q Notes

Regarded as a great vintage 2016 produced wines with excellent depth and balance. Made of 95% Sangiovese and 5% Canaiolo, aged in old cask and tonneau barrels for 10-12 months. Generous red berries and cherry fruit, sage with perfumed floral notes and a touch of spice. This wine is fresh, elegant and one very classy Chianti that has been sold out on allocation before it hits Australian shores.

Food Suggestion
