Fighting Gully Road Tempranillo 2014 - Beechworth, Victoria

Fighting Gully Road Tempranillo 2014 - Beechworth, Victoria

Under the helm of winemaker Mark Walpole, previously chief winemaker at Brown Brothers in Rutherglen for ten years and also more recently winemaker at the highly regarded Greenstone vineyard in Heathcote.

Today Walpole is regarded as one of Australia’s leading and busiest viticulturists, especially where Italian and Spanish varieties are concerned. He says there is now an impetus to look at more sustainable varieties that are better suited to our warm (and warming) climate, hence those from the Mediterranean.

Mark is joined in the vineyard by Adrian Rodda, and they make an impressive, if not seemingly laid back. The wines that are being crafted are some of the most exciting in the region.

Whilst many Australian Tempranillo’s are made for immediate drinking, Fighting Gully Road is modelled on the wines of Ribera del Duero in Spain, as it is released as a Riserva wine after four years of aging first and has the capacity to age well over ten years.

Rich black fruit aromatics, warming mid palate weight with fine grained powdery tannins.
