The Story

Sisters Kim and Tennille Chalmers have worked tirelessly to refine the line-up of Italian varieties that the family grow. The Chalmers viticultural story goes back to the late 1970s with grape growing and vine propagation, it was only in the early 2000s they began to produce their own wine. Beginning with the Murray Darling Collection in 2003 they experimented with many different varieties of French, Spanish and Italian origin in an effort to find grapes that were capable of producing optimum quality in warmer, drier growing conditions. After a few vintages the focus sharpened on Italian varieties, of which they had more than 30 in the vineyard, and they put their name on the label to create Chalmers wines.

M+Q Notes

Nero d’Avola is the main red grape of Sicily and was first bought into Australia by Chalmers in 1998. It is often talked about being the ‘next big thing’ here due to its suitability of the vine to hot, dry growing conditions. Nero d’Avola selected from a vineyard at Mildura with a complex rocky terrain, vibrant forest fruit aromas of raspberry, blackberry and savoury spice. Medium bodied weight with charry, earthy tannins.
