Adegas Guímaro Joven Mencia 2016 - Ribeira Sacra, Spain

The Story

In the rugged terrain of Ribeira Sacra, Pedro Manual Rodríguez and his family established their winery in 1991. It was named after Pedro’s grandfather’s nickname ‘Guímaro’ or ‘Rebel’ in the local language. Later Pedro met talented winemaker Raúl Pérez from Bierzo and started training with him. Raúl taught him a bunch of new ways of working including using wild yeasts, whole bunch fermentation and large old oak barrels for aging. Pedro grows his own organic vineyards and works with other growers who also farm organic after years of convincing them it was the way to go. He makes tiny quantities of white wines based of go the Godello grape and red from Mencía blended with various indigenous grapes such as Caíño, Sousón, Brancellao, Merenzao, Mouratón and Garnacha Tintorera.

M+Q Notes

The 2016 vintage was challenging due to hail that damaged many of the vineyards but the resulting wine is stunning. Dense cherry fruit on the nose with plum and blackberry and a hit of spice in the background. Ripe fruit flavours and liquorice on the palate with bitter herbs sprinkled on top. Juicy acidity and a medium bodied weight.
